On our way to Kgalagadi Nature Reserve in the Northern Cape of South Africa we stopped in Upington for a few days before heading into the park. We didn’t have any reservations but simply drove until we found a place to stay. Moonriver turned out to be one of the best experiences we have had in a very long time. The guest house has the most amazing view of the Orange River and has a deck right on the edge of water.
We stayed for the night and was wined and dined in the most spectacular way. Our room was comfortable and clean, but the beautiful bathroom with a huge shower and a massive bath absolutely dominated the space. It had class walls and made the whole area feel big and luxurious.
The staff prepared a table for us on the deck to have a romantic dinner next to river at sunset. Since Orange River Cellars is the area’s biggest and most famous wine cellar we were treated to a bottle of their wine. It is a rare thing to have a qualified chef at a guesthouse and Moonriver has one of the best. The food was not only delicious, it was beautifully served and the chef came to meet us and check on our dining experience. I am still looking for a meal to out do the one we had.
When we got to our room we were surprised with a bubble bath and rose petals.
This is probably one of the best experiences I have ever had at a guest house.
The building is beautiful. We enjoyed cocktails next to the pool while reading a book in the afternoon. Someone was always close by to ensure that we had everything we needed.
I will be sending as many guests as I possibly can to this little piece of heaven in Upington. In a town with more than 400 guesthouses, this is the one I would go to again and again. The owner has a group of guesthouses spread out through town. One of them has miniature horses with big attitudes in the yard – a great place to stay if you have children or if you are just an animal lover in general.
Every year Upington hosts the land speed test when cars and gear heads from all over the world descend upon the peaceful Afrikaans town to try and break the current land speed record in the salt pans just outside town. If you are interested in going to the test or if you are heading to Kgalagadi give Easy Gallivant a call at 017 634 5799 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
This is a gem in the heart of the kalahari.
